Biography is one of the most popular forms of historical writing, known for drawing in readers through dynamic narrative and storytelling. In this seminar, we will explore the techniques of historical biography. Each participant will choose an American figure to focus on and complete several short assignments on that person’s life and times. Students will take turns acting as writer and editor, in a workshop format. Writing assignments may include: a character sketch; a brief New York Times article; a book review; an op-ed; and the recreation of a historical scene, drawn from a subject’s life. We will also consider the politics of the American past and its relevance to modern society.
