Art and visual culture from around the world with an emphasis on thematic and historical context and cross cultural connections specific to the instructor's area of specialization.

This course focuses on buildings from the ancient Mediterranean world, their afterlives, and their influence. From the pyramids of Egypt to the palaces of Assyria and the temples of Rome, each class meeting will consider one influential building, including its sculptures, paintings, and artifacts. Preservation will be a key theme. We will ask how inheriting communities have maintained or destroyed these landmarks over time and we will draw on representations in etchings and photographs as evidence for transformations. Students will leave the course understanding ancient design principles and construction techniques, as well as the modern priorities that have shaped their global legacy.
