POL2289
Comparative Youth Protests

In capitals and cities around the world, from Colombo to Tehran, students and young people are organizing to protest against their governments, even in the face of deadly daily force from police and military services. This course permits students to understand contemporary political protests led by students and young people and to learn the methods for doing so. Protests are ongoing, in some case episodically, in Bulgaria, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Serbia, Turkey, and Venezuela, and have led to the resignation of governments, as in Bangladesh, and even change of regime, as in Nepal, but also to greater repression by government, as in Hong Kong and Myanmar. We investigate conditions and causes for these different outcomes. And we use the opportunity to learn and strengthen skills in social science research and inference as well as in spoken and written persuasion.
