Treasures of Peru: Art, Culture, and History

From the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu to the Chinese-Peruvian cuisine called chifa, Peru is renowned for its vibrant art, culture, and history. The rich diversity of Peruvian society mirrors complex interactions among Indigenous, European, African, and Asian populations. At the same time, Peru is one of the most climate-diverse countries in the world, with landscapes ranging from the Pacific and the Andes to the Amazon. While the legacy of colonialism visibly remains in cities like Cuzco, modern immigration has shaped the culture of Lima, the nation’s capital. This travel course will include on-site visits to explore different expressions of cultural syncretism, with a special focus on Indigenous and Asian influences, both past and present. A strong command of Spanish is required, as most of the course will be conducted in the target language. Students will engage in readings, lectures, group discussions, videos, interviews, and travel writing.
