HIST295
War and Diplomacy in Europe Since 1750

A survey of international politics in Europe from the 18th century to Putin’s war in Ukraine, drawing both on traditional methods of diplomatic historiography and on contemporary insights of the new diplomatic history. Themes to be considered include: the emergence of a great power system in the 17th and 18th centuries; the challenge to that system posed by the French Revolution and Napoleon; the Congress of Vienna and “the long peace” of 1815-1914; the new imperialism of the 19th century and its dismantling in the 20th century; the crises of the two world wars; adaptations to Cold War politics and to the post-Cold War era; the European Union and its discontents.
