The First World War, 1914-1918

This course will explore the causes, course, and impacts of a catastrophe that shaped Europe’s twentieth century and became a global conflict with global consequences. Among the aspects of “the Great War” that we will consider: controversies about the war’s outbreak and deep origins; industrial-era warfare and the devastating stalemate of the European fronts; mobilization for total war and its political, social, and cultural effects; the disintegration of multiethnic empires in Europe; globalization of the war and its impact on the post-war world order; peacemaking and the violent aftermaths of war.
