This seminar examines the entanglements of art, medical imaging, definitions of the body, and transformations in visual culture from the 1860s to the present. What are the legacies of 19th century anthropometry for modern categories of race, class, nationality, and gender? How do images of the body intersect with different kinds of knowledge? How did photography transform medical imaging? (How) did medical imaging transform elite arts? How do we consider the metaphor of membranes in relation to visual and material culture, and to the built environment? Through readings, viewings, site visits, and guest presentations we will consider how medical and care knowledge intersect with art world practices and paradigms regarding the body.
